PTC is a type of mechanical tooth cleaning. Trained dental hygienists use special instruments to remove dental deposits such as plaque or tartar. At our dental practice, your teeth are professionally cleaned using manual instruments, polishing heads and polishing paste. A powder jet device can also be used to treat particularly stubborn discolourations and plaque. Special focus is placed on thoroughly cleaning the interdental spaces and removing all deposits. In the final step, we then polish the surfaces of your teeth and apply a protective varnish to seal them.
Bacteria quickly accumulate on teeth and gums. Even thoroughly brushing your teeth every day is often not enough to keep these at bay. Over time, deposits form in the interdental spaces and on the gums, providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This can cause caries or inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). To keep your teeth healthy in the long term, we therefore recommend having a supplementary professional tooth cleaning when visiting your dentist. Evidence has shown that consistent preventive measures can help reduce total dental treatment costs, as caries are then prevented from occurring in the first place. Other periodontal conditions can also be detected and then treated early on.
PTC should generally be performed every six months during regular check-ups at your dentist. In certain cases, however, we recommend that patients have professional tooth cleaning done more frequently. This may apply to you if:
If any of the above applies to you, you should possibly go for a professional tooth cleaning more often. We would be happy to advise you on this personally during your next visit to our practice in Heidelberg.
A PTC session generally takes around one hour. However, we do not spend this entire hour removing plaque, colouring teeth and checking for plaque. You will also receive detailed advice on how to effectively clean your own teeth and improve your oral hygiene. During the consultation, we are keen to determine what you do on a daily basis to look after your teeth and whether there is potential for improvement in this regard. You are more than welcome to bring your personal teeth cleaning utensils with you to your professional tooth cleaning appointment.
Professional tooth cleaning is generally not painful. Only in very rare cases do some people experience a slightly unpleasant sensation. If you have inflammatory issues that have not yet healed fully when attending a professional tooth cleaning, the cleaning process can potentially be slightly unpleasant. Yet even in special cases such as this, we are more than happy to use local anaesthetic gels or numb the area in question, so that treatment is largely pain-free.
The costs for a professional tooth cleaning session are individual and are therefore discussed with our patients on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to arrange an appointment for a professional tooth cleaning session at our habios dental practice in Heidelberg, please give us a call. A member of staff on our reception will be happy to help. To secure the best possible results when cleaning your teeth at home, we would ask you to please bring your personal dental utensils with you to your PTC appointment.
